Painted Bunting

Passerina ciris

14 cm (5-6") Uncommon. Southeastern United States; casual west of New Mexico. Thickets, stream and roadside bushes, towns, gardens.

Male: gaudy multi-colored. Blue-violet head. Green back. Red underparts and rump.

Female: uniformly green; brilliant plain green above, paler lemon-green below. No wing bars. Sparrow-like bill.

Song: warble of rapid phrases, loud "chip" call.
