Pygmy Nuthatch

Sitta pygmaea

11 cm (4-5") Western United States, southern British Columbia. Pines, especially yellow pine.

A tiny bird with a gray-brown cap, blue-gray back and buffy underparts. A small white patch may be seen on back of neck.

Often seen in small flocks.

The western counterpart of the southeastern Brown-headed Nuthatch.

Song: rapid "peep peep" and a loud "wee-bee" and excited chatter.
