Red-bellied Woodpecker

Melanerpes carolinus

23-28 cm (9-11") Fairly common and widespread in eastern deciduous and southeastern pine woods, residential areas, parks. Range extends to Great Lakes area.

Back is barred with black and white stripes; underside is whitish with a tinge of red on belly. Cheeks are whitish.

Male's cap and hind neck or nape are red. Female's cap is grayish-white; only the hind neck or nape is red.

In flight; white rump and wing patches flash.

Song: low short and hoarse "chur, chur", also a rattle.
