White-breasted Nuthatch

Sitta carolinensis

13-15 cm (5-6") Common. Deciduous and mixed forests; visits seed and suet feeders in winter.

Dark crown and nape; beady black eye on white face; blue-gray back; white below except for variable amount of chestnut on belly and undertail.

Male: black crown and nape.

Female: gray or dull black crown.

Creeps head first down trees allowing it to find food "right-side up" birds would miss.

Song: short, rapid, whistled notes; call is a nasal "yank yank".
