Wilson's Phalarope

Phalaropus tricolor

23 cm (9") Common. Prairie potholes, marshes, lakes, mudflats.

Robin-sized shorebird with a distinctive spinning while swimming habit. Long needlelike black bill. In flight, no wing-bar, white rump.

Summeer: bold black face-stripe runs down neck turning to reddish brown; underparts white; female has light gray crown, male's is dark.

Winter: grayish unstreaked above, white below, thin grayish line through eye; greenish black legs.

Song: low "wurk".
