43-61 cm (17-24") Common in low wet coniferous and mixed forests; less common in northern woods.
Large gray-brown owl with no ear tufts; spotting on back; barred neck and breast; streaked belly; dark eyes. The only other large owls with dark eyes are the Barn Owl and the very rare and more restricted western Spotted Owl.
Song: dog-like barking; distinctive series of hoots - "who-cooks-for-you, who-cooks-for-you-all".
