30-36 cm (12-14") Fairly common. Pigeon-sized duck-like seabird of northern oceans; may be seen close to shore in breeding season. Long, slender, pointed bill; inside of mouth orange-red; long slender neck; bright orange-red legs.
In flight, white wing patch, white wing linings.
Breeding: jet-black overall except for large white wing patch.
Fall and Winter: whitish head, neck and gray barred back, white underparts.
Song: high pitched squeals.
