13-15 cm (5-6") Locally common. Widespread across North America. Open country near buildings, cliffs, water.
Buffy rump and squarish tail distinguish this swallow from all others except rare Cave Swallow from southern Texas. Buff or white forehead, chestnut throat, white belly. Dark back has white streaking.
Builds "mud jug" nests in small colonies under eaves, on cliffs, under dams or bridges.
Song: squeaky chattering or twittering.
