Eastern Meadowlark

Sturnella magna

23 cm (9") Common. Eastern North America. Grasslands, fields and meadows.

Brown chunky bird with a long sharply pointed bill. Yellow throat. Black "V" across yellow breast. Short wide tail with white at edges, conspicuous in flight.

Best told from similar Western Meadowlark by its different voice.

Song: clear simple whistled "see-you, see-yeeeer".
