Gray Catbird

Dumetella carolinensis

23 cm (9") Common. Thickets and brush, residential areas, gardens.

Slate-gray robin-sized bird with a black cap. Its long black tail, with inconspicuous rust color underneath, is often cocked.

Although skulking habit makes it difficult to see, it is easily identified by its voice.

Song: unrepeated and variable phrases - musical and grating notes mixed with whining catlike "meow" calls.
