20 cm (8") Fairly common. Southeastern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico. Accidental southeastern California, western Texas. Canyons, mountain pine-oak.
Large dusky gray flycatcher. Upper bill is black, lower bill is orange. Uniformly gray breast. Similar Olive-sided Flycatcher has a shorter tail and a white line down center of breast.
Was called Coues' Flycatcher. Nicknamed "Jose Maria" bird after its voice.
Song: "ho-say-mari-a", call is repeated "pip".
