Least Grebe

Tachybaptus dominicus

25 cm (9-10") Uncommon and local. Resident in southern Texas; casual stragglers to southeastern California, southern Arizona. Robin-sized - North America's smallest grebe. Short necked with golden yellowish or red eyes; slim dark bill.

In flight, displays large white wing patch. May nest any time of year.

Breeding: black crown, throat, hindneck and back; gray head and neck.

Non Breeding: gray-brown head and neck; dark crown; whitish throat.

Song: sharp "peek" call.
