15 cm (6") Fairly common across North America; more so in west. Breeds in northern bogs and wet mountain meadows; in winter and migration, thickets, brush piles, wood margins.
Gray central crown stripe. Broad gray eyebrow stripe. Band of creamy buff across breast. Fine streaks on sides and breast may converge into a central spot. White unstreaked belly.
Song: in breeding a sweet and gurgling song suggesting Purple Finch's; junco-like chip calls and a "zee" call.
