Pine Grosbeak

Pinicola enucleator

23 cm (9") Locally common in North America's boreal forests; winters irruptively southward in mixed forests, fruity trees.

Tame Robin-sized plump finch with a dark stubby conical bill; two white wing bars; long tail.

Male:  rose-red overall. 

Female: grayish with yellow-green or rusty tinge on head and rump.

In flight; undulating flight.

Song: musical warble song; flight call is a whistled "pui pui pui".
