Pine Siskin

Carduelis pinus

13 cm (5") Fairly common but irregular. Throughout North America. Coniferous and mixed forest in summer; gregarious in winter in brushy pastures, weedy fields, roadsides, feeders.

Sparrow-like; streaked overall. The amount of yellow at base of tail and in flight feathers is variable. Deeply notched tail. Slender bill.

Song: American Goldfinch-like song; "tee-ee" call and often heard flying overhead a descending "chee".
