14 cm (5-6") Fairly common. Arizona, southwestern New Mexico. High mountains (above 1800 meters). Pine and spruce forests mixed with oak.
Plain gray back and tail. Distinctive tri-colored head; red forehead, black center, white nape. Red throat and breast. White belly.
Nests on ground.
Song: "zweet" notes similar to Yellow Warbler's.
