Red-legged Kittiwake

Rissa brevirostris

38 cm (15") Rare. Alaska. Small seagoing gull that nests in large cliff colonies; winters near breeding grounds. White head, underparts and tail; gray mantle; pitch black wing tips with no white spots; dark eyes; short unmarked pale yellow bill; deep red legs.

Winter adult similar but has dark gray smudge behind eye. Similar Black-legged Kittiwake has black legs and a longer bill.

Song: raucous "kckekek" and "kittewake".
