20-25 cm (8-10") Common. Marshes, wet meadows, rice fields, grainfields.
Robin-sized, brownish, chickenlike bird. Dark brown back with white streaks; grayish underside with dark barring; short bright yellow or greenish-yellow bill; black face and throat - immatures lack black and are buffy here.
Usually hides in marsh vegetation but sometimes ventures into open.
Song: a descending whinny; a plaintive ascending "ker-wee?"; a sharp alarm "keek".
