58-71 cm (23-28") Fairly common but local. Salt marshes, shores; freshwater marshes; roosts in trees during the day.

Stocky body; thick bill; short neck and legs; red eyes; black cap and back; gray wings; white underparts. Immature is brown with white specks on back and wings; told from similar immature Yellow-crowned Night-Heron by its longer, thinner bill and greenish-yellow lower bill.

Song: flat "quok" given at dusk or night.
