Yellow-crowned Night-Heron

Nyctanassa violacea

56-71 cm (22-28") Fairly common. Marshes, streams, woody swamps, tidal shallows, mudflats; roosts in trees during the day.

Stocky gray heron with black and white head. In flight, entire feet extend beyond tail. Immature is duskier brown and more finely speckled white on back and wings than very similar imm. Black-crowned Night-Heron; also has longer legs and shorter, thicker all-dark bill.

Song: "Quark" given at dusk or night.
