Double-crested Cormorant

Phalacrocorax auritus

76-89 cm (30-35") Common and widespread in both marine and fresh water habitats. The only cormorant usually seen on fresh inland waters. Rocky coasts, beaches, inland lakes, rivers, swamps, marshes. Very large diving water-bird with a long neck and orange throat pouch. Stands erect on rocks or posts.

Adult is all black.

Immature is brown above, pale below.

In flight, distinctive kinked neck. Flies in long lines or "V's".

Song: grunts.
