Gilded Flicker

Colaptes chrysoides

32 cm (13") Common. Large-sized woodpecker of desert regions of the southwestern United States. Golden yellow underwings distinguish the Gilded Flicker from the Northern Flicker found within the same region, which have red underwings.  Also it has a red mustache.

Gilded Flickers occasionally hybridize with Northern Flickers in the narrow zones where their range and habitat overlap.

Song: loud repeated "wick" and a loud klee-yer.
