41-51 cm (16-20") Fairly common. In summer, prairie potholes, moist grassland, mudflats, marshes; winters along coasts.
Crow-sized shorebird. Long, slightly upcurved, two-toned bill - pink at base, black at tip; long grayish legs; upperparts mottled buff, brown, and black; underparts heavily barred in summer, more plain buffy in winter.
In flight, buffy underwings, dark rump. Similar Hudsonian Godwit has black wing linings, white rump.
Song: whistled "god-wit".
