46 cm (18") Uncommon. Summers on lakes and ponds, winters mostly on coastal waters. A large crow-sized grebe; long neck; long sharply pointed yellowish bill; dark eyes.

In flight, two white wing patches.

Summer: black cap; whitish chin and cheek contrast with reddish-brown foreneck.

Winter: dark crown and upperparts; white chin extends behind ear in a crescent; grayish throat and neck. Largest grebe found in the East.

Song: nasal honk, loon-like wail.
