Tiny plump active bird with a short tail. Olive-gray above; whitish-buff below. White eye ring. White wing bars. Male has an often concealed red crown patch.
Briefly hovers and flicks wings at end of branches as it feeds.
Song: high whistles and a loud 3-part phrase "see see see you you you look-at-me look-at-me"; scolding "ji-dit".
