18 cm (7") Common in Atlantic Ocean, rare in Pacific. Follows ships. Broad white rump band extending below bird to undertail coverts otherwise brownish black overall. Feet often hang behind its square or rounded tail. Swallow-like flight. Flutters or hovers while pattering its feet on the water. Similar to but smaller than Leach's and Band-rumped storm-petrels.
