Melanerpes formicivorus

23 cm (9") Fairly common but local. Western United States. Oak, oak-pine forests. Black back. White cheeks and forehead. Males have red caps, females have black and red crowns.

In flight; white rump, white patch near wing tip.

Found in colonies. Use colonial trees to store acorns for the winter.

Song: loud "ja-cob, ja-cob".
