Red-headed Woodpecker

Melanerpes erythrocephalus

20-25 cm (8-10") Uncommon. Eastern North America. Open forests especially oaks and hickories, orchards, residential areas, parks.

Head, neck and throat are all red; underside is pure white; back is black; wings are black and white; white rump.

In flight; large white wing area and rump are distinctive.

Forages both on tree trunks and on the ground and often seen flycatching. Often perches in the open at tips of dead branches.

Song: raucous "kwrrk".
