Lewis' Woodpecker

27 cm (11") Fairly common. Western United States, southweastern Canada. Open woodlands of mountain foothills and valleys, coastal areas.

Dark greenish black upperparts. Dark red in face. Gray breast and collar. Pinkish belly.

In flight; wide dark wings and slow direct flight give a crow-like appearance.
