76-109 cm (30-43") Uncommon and widespread. Seacoasts, large lakes and rivers.
Very large dark raptor. Soars on flat wings. Unmistakable; brown body, white head and tail, huge yellow bill.
Immature: all dark; resembles immature Golden Eagle but has less defined white areas under wings and tail and a proportionately larger head and shorter tail.
Eats mostly fish and waterfowl. United States national bird.
Song: piercing scream; chirps at nest.
