Downy Woodpecker

Picoides pubescens

15-18 cm (6-7") Found in suburbs, orchards, shade trees, and woods.

Plain white back. Usually has black spots on its white outer tail feathers. Small bill. Males have a red spot on the head.

Very similar Hairy Woodpecker is larger with a much larger bill and no spots on its outer tail feathers.

Song: "pik" and rattle call.
