18 cm (7") Fairly common. Southwestern United States. Dry brushland, mesquite and cactus country, towns, suburbs.
Back is barred black and white. Male has red cap. Female lacks red on the head.
In California, similar Nuttall's Woodpecker is found west of the Sierra.
