Hairy Woodpecker

Picoides villosus

23-25 cm (9-10") Mature deciduous or mixed woods.

Plain white back. Plain white outer tail feathers. Males have a red spot on the head. Very similar Downy Woodpecker is smaller with a much smaller bill and may have dark spots on its outer white tail feathers.

Song: loud "peek", also a loud rattle.
