Dark overall; head and neck purplish; bill two-toned with blue-gray at base and black at tip; body and wings blue-gray; legs bluish green. Immature is all white with dull olive legs; bill two-toned with blue-gray at base and black at tip; in transition to adult plumage birds become blotched with blue-gray.
Song: usually silent but squawks when alarmed.
