38-48 cm (15-19") Fairly common. Tundra in summer; in migration and winter, prairies, shores, mudflats, marshes, wet fields.
Large, crow-sized, brown shorebird; long downcurved bill; boldly striped crown; dark eye line; long gray legs.
In flight: underwings brown, belly pale, barred rump and tail.
Song: short, loud, rapid whistles "whi-whi-whi-whi-whi".
