Hermit Thrush

Catharus guttatus

18 cm (7") Common and widespread across North America. Coniferous or mixed forest floor; in migration and winter other woods, thickets, parks.

Reddish brown tail contrasts with olive-brown or gray-brown back. White eye ring. Whitish or buffy breast speckled with spots.

Frequently flicks its tail and wings.

Song: beautiful and haunting; long prolonged whistle followed by clear flute-like phrases on different pitches; low "chuck" call.
