American Tree Sparrow

Spizella arborea

16 cm (6") Fairly common throughout most of Canada and United States. Arctic shrub in the summer, in winter seen in weedy fields, hedgerows, and at feeders.

Rufous crown makes it our "Winter Chippy". Thin rufous line behind eye. Gray head, throat, and breast with a central dark spot. Rufous patches at side of breast. Two bold white wing bars. Notched tail.

Song: sweet opening on one or two clear notes followed by a warble; in winter diagnostic "teedle-eet" call.
