14 cm (5-6") Common throughout North America. Suburbs, lawns, sparse grass under scattered trees, pine forests.
In breeding; bright chestnut crown, white eyebrow stripe, black line through eye.
In fall and winter; streaked crown, ear patch, and told from similar Brewer's and Clay-colored Sparrows at this time, by its gray rump which contrasts with its brown back.
Song: chipping rattle on one pitch like a squirrel or chipmunk.
