Field Sparrow

Spizella pusilla

14 cm (5-6") Fairly common. Southeastern Canada and United States east of Rockies. Fields with tall grass or scattered saplings.

Gray face. Rufous crown. Thin rufous line behind eye. Thin white eye-ring. Bright pink bill. Clear underparts. Breast and sides a buffy-red. Belly grayish. Pink legs. Notched tail.

Song: series of clear sweet slurring notes speeding into a trill - like a ping-pong ball dropping on a table.
