Black-chinned Sparrow

Spizella atrogularis

15 cm (6") Uncommon. Southwestern United States. Chaparral, sage, brushy mountain and foothill slopes.

Pink bill, gray head and breast with white belly suggests a junco. However, it has a browner streaked back with no white in its tail.

Male: black chin and around base of bill.

Female: completely gray head.

Song: begins with a slow "sweet sweet sweet" then rapid trill suggesting a Field Sparrow.
