46-51 cm (18-20") Rare but regular winter visitor from Europe, seen along both coasts, casual inland. Lakes, bays, marshes. Surface feeding duck usually seen with similar American Wigeons.
Male: reddish-brown head with pale buff stripe on forehead and crown; gray back and sides; blue bill with black tip.
Female: small rounded uniformly brown head; brownish back and sides; light gray or bluish bill with black tip.
In flight, white patch on forewing; grayish "wingpits" or axillaries - not white as American Wigeon's.
Song: two-note whistle, soft quacks.
