25-28 cm (10-11") Fairly common. Nests on tundra forest bogs, winters on lakeshores, mudflats, coastal marshes.
Robin-sized. Long bright yellow to orange legs. Long straight dark bill.
Summer: blackish-brown upperparts spotted with white; sides barred with black; white underside.
Winter: more grayish above, less barring below.
In flight: plain dark wings and light rump.
Greater Yellowlegs is larger with longer bill.
Song: whistled "tu-tu".
