28 cm (11") Uncommon. Pacific coast. Nests along mountain streams above treeline in northwest North America. Winters along rocky seashores and reefs.
Uniformly dark gray above. Dull yellow legs.
Breeding: underparts heavily barred.
Fall, winter: breasts and sides washed in gray.
Teeters and bobs like a Spotted Sandpiper.
Song: rapid clear notes.
