36-43 cm (14-17") Fairly common. Nests on prairie wetlands in West, coastal marshes, mudflats in East; winters on coastal salt marshes, beaches.
Crow-sized shorebird with a long straight thick bill and long grayish legs.
Summer: scaled brownish-gray above and below with a white belly.
Winter: uniformly pale gray above, white below.
In flight: striking black-and-white wing pattern.
Song: distinctive "pill-will-willet".
