20-23 cm (8-9") Common. Streamsides, lakes, wooded swamps, ponds.
Robin-sized sandpiper.
Summer: speckled, dark brown upperparts, white underparts; bold white eye-ring; olive legs.
Winter: plain grayish above, pure white below.
In flight: plain dark wings and dark rump. Usually solitary.
Similar Lesser Yellowlegs is larger with yellow legs and white rump; Spotted Sandpiper teeters more and has a white wing stripe.
Song: "wheet-wheet-wheet".
