VIREOS are small songbirds of shade and forest trees. They are often confused with warblers, especially female wood warblers for they are similar in size and drab in color. Some have eye rings that form "spectacles" and wing bars, others have no wing bars and eyestripes. The bill is heavier than those of warblers with a slight hook at the tip. Unlike warblers that flit and hop these birds are more leisurely and deliberate in their feeding. Persistent singers.
