13-18 cm (5-7") Common and widespread. Nests on Tundra, winters along coastal and inland marshes.
The only sparrow-sized "peep" sandpiper with yellowish or greenish legs; thin pointed black bill.
Summer: blackish-brown upperparts; breast, neck, and sides are finely streaked with brown and washed with buff; white belly.
Winter: darker above than Western and Semipalmated Sandpipers with a brownish breast band.
Song: thin "kreeet".
