20 cm (8") Uncommon. Nests on Tundra, winters on coastal ponds, marshes. Migrates mostly through Great Plains.
Robin-sized sandpiper feeds like dowitchers by probing mud in rapid sewing-machine motion. Long greenish legs; long, thin, black bill, slightly drooped at tip; whitish eyebrow.
Summer: dark mottled upperparts; heavily streaked and barred underparts.
Winter: grayish overall, white belly.
In flight, white rump, plain dark wings.
Song: hoarse "querp".
