18-20 cm (7-8") Uncommon. Nests on Tundra near coast, in migration mudflats, beaches, marshes, open country.
Sparrow-sized "peep" sandpiper. Conspicuous white rump, seen in flight or when preening, makes this the easiest small sandpiper to identify. Like Baird's Sandpiper, wings extend past tail when standing, giving it a long, horizontal look but Baird's has a dark rump.
Song: distinctive high insect-like "jeeet".
