18-20 cm (7-8") Abundant. Nests on Tundra, winters along sandy coastal beaches.
Plump Robin-sized sandpiper often seen at surf picking up food exposed by retreating waves. Straight black bill as long as its head; black legs.
Summer: black speckled bright rusty upperparts, head, neck and upper breast; white lower breast, sides, belly.
Winter: very pale gray above, pure white below; black shoulder patch may be visible.
In flight, bold white wing-stripe.
Song: "kip".
